How to Write Etsy Listings Like a Human (That Actually Get Sales)
Apr 08, 2026🎧 Listen to this blog post as a Podcast instead How to Write Etsy Listings Like a Human (That Actually Get Sales)
If your Etsy listing sounds awkward, stiff, or like you panicked and copied bits from 12 other shops… this one’s for you.
Because here’s the thing: your traffic probably isn’t the problem. Your listing just isn’t doing its job yet.
In this video, I’m showing new Etsy sellers how to write Etsy listings like a real human (without ditching SEO), so buyers actually understand what you’re selling and feel confident enough to click Add to basket.
We cover:
- The simple Etsy listing structure that works for any handmade product
- How to write Etsy titles that sound normal but still include keywords
- The first 3 lines of your Etsy description that matter most (because people SCAN)
- What to write when you don’t know what buyers care about yet
- How to use bullet points + FAQs to reduce “Should I buy this?” hesitation
- Why keyword stuffing makes your listings worse (and what to do instead)
How to Write Etsy Listings Like a Human (That Actually Get Sales)
If your Etsy listings sound a bit… stiff.
Like you’re trying to sell a candle but somehow it reads like a haunted museum plaque.
You’re not alone.
Most new Etsy sellers do one of two things:
- Write barely anything (because panic)
- Write loads… but it’s all vibes and no useful info
And then you sit there wondering why you’re getting views but not sales.
Spoiler: your listing isn’t doing its job yet.
I’m Steph from Handmade Bosses, and I’ve seen this a thousand times. Your product is usually fine. Your photos are usually fine. Your effort is definitely fine.
The listing copy though?
That’s where things quietly fall apart.
Let’s fix it.
What your Etsy listing is actually meant to do
Your listing has ONE job:
Help a stranger decide: “Is this for me?”
That’s it.
Not:
- impress them with your creativity
- tell them your entire origin story
- cram in 47 keywords like it’s 2014
Buyers are scanning. Not studying.
They’re a tired little magpie scrolling in bed, one eye closed, card in hand.
So we write for scanning humans.
Not marketing goblins.
The Buyer Brain Map (what people scan for)
When someone lands on your Etsy listing, their brain is basically asking:
1) What is it?
Be obvious. Quickly.
2) Will it work for me?
Is it the right size, material, scent, style, colour, vibe?
3) What do I need to know before I buy?
Dispatch times. What’s included. Care instructions. Gift packaging. The boring stuff that sells things.
If your listing answers those three?
You get:
Clarity.
Confidence.
Click.
If it doesn’t?
They bounce.
Even if your product is gorgeous.
Even if you are, in fact, an angel with a glue gun.
Etsy title formula that sounds human (and still helps SEO)
A good Etsy title isn’t a poem.
It’s a signpost.
Use this simple structure:
What it is + Who it’s for + Key detail
Examples (because we love stealing templates around here):
Candles
- Soy Wax Candle, Clean Burn, Lavender + Vanilla, Gift for Her
- Hand-poured Candle, Citrus Scent, Vegan, Cosy Home Gift
Jewellery
- Sterling Silver Hoop Earrings, Minimalist Everyday Jewellery
- Personalised Name Necklace, Custom Gift for Mum
Crochet
- Crochet Baby Blanket, Soft Neutral, Newborn Gift
- Chunky Crochet Beanie, Handmade Winter Hat, Unisex
What NOT to do (respectfully)
Don’t start with “Beautiful…”
Because “beautiful” tells me nothing.
Everything on Etsy is beautiful.
Even the haunted doll clothes.
And please stop with:
“Candle Candle Candle Gift Candle Handmade Candle Soy Candle”
That’s not SEO.
That’s a cry for help.
Use keywords, yes.
But put them in a sentence a human could say without needing a lie down.
The first 3 lines of your Etsy description matter the most
This is where beginners accidentally lose sales.
Because Etsy shows a chunk of your description and hides the rest behind “more”.
And most buyers won’t click “more”.
So your first 3 lines need to do the heavy lifting.
They should answer:
What is it? What does it do? What’s the main selling point?
Here are examples you can model:
Candles
A hand-poured soy wax candle with a clean, slow burn and a soft lavender + vanilla scent. Perfect for cosy evenings or gifting.
Jewellery
Minimal sterling silver hoops for everyday wear. Lightweight, comfortable, and made to last. A simple gift that actually gets worn.
Crochet
A soft crochet baby blanket in neutral tones, made for pram naps and newborn cuddles. Gentle on sensitive skin and designed to be used daily.
See how that reads?
Normal. Helpful. Clear.
Not:
“Introducing this beautiful handmade item…”
No thanks, Jane Austen.
“But I don’t know what buyers care about yet…”
Totally fair.
So here’s the cheat.
Buyers usually care about one of these three things:
1) How it feels
Cosy. Soft. Lightweight. Luxurious. Comfortable.
2) How it works
Burn time. Size. Materials. Hypoallergenic. Washable. Durable.
3) How it fits their life
Gift-ready. Fast dispatch. Personalised. Matches their style. Easy to use.
Pick one main angle and lead with it.
If you try to cover all three at once, your description turns into a chaotic buffet.
Pick one main plate.
Bullet points are where you earn the sale
People scan bullet points like they’re reading the back of a cereal box.
So give them what they need.
Candle bullet example
Details
- Wax: 100% soy wax
- Scent: Lavender + vanilla
- Size: 200ml amber jar
- Burn time: approx X hours
- Wick: cotton wick
- Packaging: gift-ready option available
Jewellery bullet example
Details
- Material: sterling silver / gold filled
- Size: hoop diameter / chain length
- Hypoallergenic: yes/no
- Gift packaging: included / optional
Crochet bullet example
Details
- Size: exact measurements
- Yarn: type + softness (and if it’s baby-safe)
- Care: machine washable? hand wash?
- Custom colours: yes/no
If your buyer has to message you for the basics, most won’t.
They’ll just buy from someone whose listing already answered it.
Add a mini FAQ (it makes you look established fast)
This is the bit that saves you time and boosts conversions.
Because it removes the “hmm but…” doubts.
Add a short FAQ at the bottom like:
FAQ
- Is this ready to ship?
- Can I choose a different scent/colour?
- Is it gift wrapped?
- How long does personalisation take?
- What if I need it by a certain date?
Answer each in one line.
Short. Clear. Done.
Listing Anatomy (copy this for every product)
Here’s your calm little structure you can repeat forever:
Title
What it is + who it’s for + key detail
First 3 lines
What it is + main benefit + who it’s for
Bullets
Specs, size, materials, care, dispatch
FAQ
Gift wrap? custom options? dispatch? returns?
And the rule that pays your bills:
If they have to think, they won’t buy.
You want your listing to feel like:
“Yep. Got it.”
Not:
“Wait… what size is it… is it silver… does it come in a box… how long is dispatch… is it scented or just vibes…”
The 3 lines most beginners miss (add these)
These matter more than fancy wording.
1) Who it’s for
Perfect for sensitive skin.
Ideal for new mums.
Great gift for teachers.
2) What’s included
You’ll receive: 1 candle + care card.
You’ll receive: 1 pair of hoops + gift pouch.
3) Dispatch time in plain English
Made to order: dispatches in 3–5 working days.
Ready to ship: dispatches next working day.
Uncertainty kills sales.
Clarity sells.
A quick note on Etsy keywords (don’t go feral)
Yes, Etsy SEO matters.
No, you don’t need to stuff keywords everywhere like a cursed Wordle.
Put keywords in:
- your title (naturally)
- the first line or two of your description
- your bullet details (materials, size, etc)
And then stop.
You’re selling to humans.
Not training a search engine dog.
The Sam vs Lydia situation (aka why this works)
Sam writes:
“Handmade Candle Gift For Her Home Decor Scented Soy Candle Aromatherapy Relaxing”
Then starts the description with:
“Introducing this beautiful handmade candle created with love and care…”
No burn time. No size. No dispatch info.
Buyer messages: “Hi what size is this?”
Sam replies two hours later.
They don’t buy.
Lydia writes:
“Soy Wax Candle, Lavender + Vanilla, Clean Burn, Gift Ready Option”
First line: clear.
Bullets: clear.
Dispatch: clear.
FAQ: clear.
Buyer doesn’t message.
Buyer buys.
Lydia has a cuppa and a quiet moment of smugness, as she deserves.
That’s the difference.
Not talent.
Not luck.
Just clarity.
