Are you struggling to get Etsy sales? Are your listings getting little or no views? Do you have a low conversion rate on Etsy?

In this blog I’ll explain why your Etsy sales are a flop and the top 3 things to review so you can fix your Etsy listings the RIGHT and boost your Etsy sales.

Before you start getting in deep you need to look at 2 potential problem areas to make sure you’re changing the right things:

  1. Is it a conversion issue
  2. Or, a views issue

If it's a conversion issue, you will be seeing things like a lot of favourites and views but no sales. And that means there are maybe a handful of things within your listing that's actively turning people off from buying.

So, that could be things like negative reviews, it could also be pictures, or a spelling error, maybe there's not enough detail in your titles and descriptions.

If it is a views issue, you're not going to be seeing any views or visits - your shop will be as quiet as the night. And that would be things like SEO, pictures and not driving your own traffic.

The top 3 things to review

SEO

You’re probably sick of hearing about SEO but, there’s a reason why we talk about it so often. It’s a great tool to drive the right traffic to your shop to get views and improve your conversion rate.

But, time and time again I see people using the WRONG keywords…words that don’t reflect what they’re selling.

An example that I had earlier was a listing for some funky pink gnome leggings. Within the SEO, there were also black gnome leggings, purple gnome leggings, blue gnome leggings … all within the one listing. In her titles, tags and description.

This might make sense in our heads when we're looking at it from the back end, because we're thinking, well, they're all gnome leggings, they're all the same design, the same style, so I'm going to put them all under one listing.

But you only have one front picture, which might be red gnome leggings!! So, what does that mean for that particular listing if someone is going on to Etsy and typing in pink gnome leggings and your front picture is red gnome leggings?

It means you’re not giving your customer what they wanted and they’re going to scroll on by.

Don’t be tempted to overload your titles, tags and descriptions with words that sort of describe what you’re selling.

Make sure your SEO and keywords are tailored to your target market, using descriptive words that reflect what you’re selling and in a style of language your target market would search for what you’re selling.

Variations

An issue I see a lot on Etsy is people offering product variations in one listing - it can really present a massive issue.

Take a necklace for example, where people see the potential to make it into a bracelet, an anklet, a choker, etc. Lot’s of times people use the same listing and add the different product variations. I’m not talking about different sizes here.

So if I search in Etsy for an elephant anklet I want to see that in the search results and the first picture. But instead I see listings for elephant necklaces because the anklet is buried in a variation or a later photo.

You’re again not giving your customer what they’re searching for and they’re not going to click on your listing. It’s another sale lost and you’re getting buried further down in the Etsy algorithm.

Instead, make a listing per item variation. This way you can make your photos and SEO specific to the item you’re selling, Meaning more of your target market will see your listing and they’ll be shown more relevant items what they’re looking for.

It’s a win, win for everyone. Your Etsy sales are improving and you’ve made a customer very happy.

Losing browsers

It’s a natural thing, from my experience 90 - 99% of people that view your listing in Etsy will not buy. It’s perfectly normal to have a conversion rate between 1 and 10%.

For every 100 people browsing your Etsy shop up to 99 people will not buy from you. You could be bringing in loads of traffic and losing potential future customers…that’s a lot of people.

You’re paying to lose these customers …. Either through paid adverts on the likes of Facebook ads, Google ads, etc or through the time and effort you’ve spent listing your items, marketing on social media and emails.

And the biggest mistake that I see is people just kind of leave them and off they go into the lost world of the internet, never to be seen in your shop again.

You need to be looking at ‘what do I need to do to keep those people in my world? They're not gonna buy now.’

We're not gonna bang them around the head with, buy this thing, buy that thing. But we wanna keep them around because we've acquired them.

So let's hang out with them for a bit. Let’s nurture them and warm them up a little bit more.

They can be nurtured on your home hub, which is your social media channel, Etsy explore or it could be through your email mailing list. You can make your customers feel really special and exclusive by giving them sneak peaks, behind the scenes, exclusive discounts.

It actually costs you something like quadruple the amount of the money marketing to new customers than it does to nurture and sell to the people you already have following you.
